At midnight on Saturday, March 9, 2002, a select crowd of a who's who of European festival promoters, record company executives and journalists gathered at London's legendary "Pizza Express Jazzclub" to celebrate the release of e.s.t.'s new album. Strange Place For Snow (ACT 9011-2). The evening was a prelude to the band's international breakthrough. After nearly 100 concerts in 18 countries and six prestigious awards, e.s.t. Europe by storm. The trio won the Victoire du Jazz in France and the BBC Jazz Award in England as "Best International Artist". It has won the German "Jazz Award", the "Jahrespreis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik", the "Guinness Jazz in Europe Award" in Ireland and the MIDEM 2003 Special Award as "Discovery of the Year". Strange Place For Snow sold almost three times more copies than previous albums and the band even went on a three-week tour to the USA - probably the only European jazz ACT to do so in 2002. The tour for the album Strange Place For Snow took place in Prague on Monday, September 10, 2002. In March 2003 - almost to the day, exactly one year after the memorable evening in London - Esbjörn Svensson, Dan Berglund and Magnus Öström gathered in Stockholm's Atlantis studio to record their next album: Seven Days of Falling (ACT 9012-2) was recorded over eight days of recording and then mixed over five days - an unusually long time in the jazz we are more used to with pop productions. But it reflects the trio's philosophy: they bring patterns from the world of pop to the world of jazz - and that applies not only to their own image, performing with elaborate light shows and special sound effects (they never travel without their lighting and sound engineer), but also to the recordings, which take weeks of rehearsals to prepare and culminate in two four-day recording sessions. They leave nothing to chance and control even the smallest detail of their production. In order to get the inspiration they need for the new album, the band likes to retreat to the studio in the weeks leading up to the recording session. The area around Esbjörn's hometown of Enskededalen, near Stockholm, can always witness the famous son of the city wandering through the surrounding forests. "I love long walks, two or three hours a day, it inspires me." In the ten years that have passed between the first album When Everyone Has Gone and the current production Seven Days of Falling, the band has grown closer and developed a very distinctive voice, a distinctive sound. The three Swedes never followed any trends, never copied any idols, but focused on themselves and created their own music, their own style. At the same time, they have remained open to all musical directions, and so when asked for their favourite bands, you will hear answers like "The Police", "Deep Purple", "Radiohead" or "Apex Twins". Seven Days of Falling is a highlight of their work to date. It is the culmination of an evolution that began with "Dodge the Dodo" from From Gagarin's Point of View (ACT 9005-2) and continued consistently through "Spam-Boo-Limbo" and a hidden track on Good Morning Susie Soho (ACT 9009-2) to "Behind the Yashmak" on Strange Place for Snow. The album Seven Days of Falling takes the listener through beautiful musical landscapes, including the gorgeous ballads "Why She Couldn't Come" and "Ballad for the Unborn". Perhaps the magic of e.s.t. is most evident in tracks like "O. D.R. I.P." and "Elevation of Love", when Dan Berglund picks up the bow and starts using special effects to sound like Jimi Hendricks, and when Magnus Öström turns up the tempo with heavy drum'n'bass rhythms. Soft and seductive melodies combined with modern, driving grooves - this blend forms the band's signature style. The new album will be released on September 22, 2003 and 12 days before that the band invites you to a release party, which this time will not take place in a jazz club, but in the Cité de la Musique in Paris - a concert hall with a capacity of 1,100 seats!In 2003, 89 concerts are scheduled, a tour of the USA as an opening act for K. D. Lang, tours in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden and Canada, and appearances in the capitals of England, Spain, Portugal and Italy. For the first time, e. s.t. is also touring Japan - not in small jazz clubs, but due to the huge demand in advance in the country's major concert halls. e. s.t. has become a Swedish success story. And when Esbjörn opens a concert evening with the succinct words "We are e. s. t. from Sweden", one is immediately enchanted by the charm and modesty of these ambassadors of great music.
