Henderson's illustrious recording career began in the early 1960s with Blue Note. In 1963, he launched his career as a leader with his debut on Blue Note with Page One, a remarkable quintet session with trumpeter Kenny Dorham, a collaborator who contributed two originals to the six-track album and also wrote the liner notes, claiming that the "tenor saxophonist with the goatee" was "one of the most musical young saxophonists since Charlie Parker." The band also included a stellar rhythm section around bassist Butch Warren, drummer Pete LaRoc and pianist McCoy Tyner, who is listed on the album cover as "etc." because he just signed with Impulse!. The first side opens with Dorham's double-block: the lilting, bossa-heavy "Blue Bossa," where the trumpeter and tenor play an infectious overture with harmonic beauty before Henderson delivers a smoky, spirited solo, and the balladic "La Mesha," played with soulful tenor grace. The rest of the album is made up of Henderson's impressive originals, including the driving blues of "Homestretch," featuring fiery solos from both frontmen, Tyner's rolling break and LaRoc's brisk drumming, and the swinging "Jinrikisha," which Henderson sings with his energetic tenor improvisations. The highlight of the collection is Henderson's bossa-inflected "Recorda Me," which is not only a contemporary jazz standard but also a piece he never tired of playing, as evidenced by the fact that it was in his repertoire throughout his tenure as bandleader. The first side closes with the slow blues "Out of the Night," which is superbly performed by the rhythm section and features arguably Henderson's strongest improvisational section.
