Johann Sebastian Bach's exemplary late version of the St John Passion BWV 245 is undoubtedly one of the finest settings of the Passion of Jesus Christ in the history of music. For his first Passion as Thomaskantor of Leipzig, the composer made use of all musical possibilities, so that the orchestra includes unusual instruments such as the oboe da caccia, two violas d'amore and the lute. However, unlike the St Matthew Passion BWV 244, there is no definitive version of the St John Passion, as it underwent several major changes during Bach's lifetime, as a result of which various versions of the work can be reconstructed. The traditional version of the partly autograph score is still the most commonly performed and recorded, but a very interesting alternative can be found in the most recent version from 1749. In this version, recorded here, Bach returned to the original version in many details, but ordered changes in the instrumentation, for example: he removed the lute, which was probably no longer available, and replaced the two violas d'amore with muted violins. A contrapuntal 'bassono grosso' was added. However, there are also significant textual changes in the arias. In addition, it is clear that the role singers were not meant to sing along with the choruses and chorales. It is clear, therefore, that in his last attested performance of the St John Passion, the elder Bach was experimenting with a performance practice much closer to that of the 19th century than is generally assumed today. Hans-Christoph Rademann, together with Gaechinger Cantorey, here presents an exemplary recording of this late version, based on a carefully prepared new critical edition published by CARUS. With an outstanding ensemble of soloists, this recording is a must for any lover of Bach's music!
