Heaven and Earth is King Crimson's most comprehensive box set to date, covering more than a decade of the band's history. It includes the most complete collection of concerts from Project 1-4 and all the studio recordings from Project 2, plus a wide selection of Project albums and related recordings. When the double trio of Fripp, Belew, Levin, Mastelotto, Bruford and Gunn wanted to create new material after the THRAK era ended in 1997, they formed smaller groups in a process Fripp called FraKctalisation. As individual band members sought to test their ideas in front of an audience, ProjeKcts, as they were called, often played in smaller clubs away from the big stages. As a result, these highly creative ventures were often invisible and inaudible to the general public, representing the "unknown King Crimson". Four CDs and two Blu-ray discs contain these risky ventures in comprehensive detail. By the time the musicians re-formed as King Crimson, the band had morphed into the duo of Belew, Fripp, Gunn and Mastelotto. Tony Levin and Bill Bruford left the band for other commitments. The next period of King Crimson produced two studio albums, a lengthy concert tour, a mini studio album, and numerous live recordings on CD/DVD/download until 2003. Both studio albums are included in the 5.1 surround mix for the first time. 2000's The ConstruKction of Light underwent the most radical changes of any KC album. The loss of the original electric drum recordings allowed Pat Mastelotto to record the material exclusively on his current acoustic-electronic drum kit, making this a new album of familiar material. The 2003 album The Power To Belive also used other sounds discovered by mixer and producer David Singleton and incorporated them into the surround mix. The studio albums are complemented by 11 CDs of live recordings from various tours, including a US concert with Tool, a specially compiled 3CD set from 2000 with interwoven improvisations, and a London concert with a very different, very energetic, imaginative KC setlist. Each night during the 2000 European tour was filmed by Bootleg TV Style. This had the advantage that the film crew became very familiar with the playlists, knowing exactly which key moments to focus on which musician and how best to incorporate the improvisational parts into the flow of the concerts. Most concert films are just that: a film of one performance or several nights on a particular stage. With Bootleg TV, the band has taken a different approach, as evidenced by a total of nearly 10 hours of live material. This is purely an example of how, by using the full capacity of the discs from the era when they were thinking of splitting the era into two boxes, they managed to gather the band's history during this period in one place. Then, when King Crimson went on hiatus again, Adrian Belew and Robert Fripp created ProjeKct 6 in 2006, and four of their concerts can be found on Blu-ray Disc 2. Finally, CDs 17 and 18 present the perfect setlist recorded at the New York shows during King Crimson's 2008 tour after a five-year hiatus. Following Trey Gunn's departure, Tony Levin returned to the band and Gavin Harrison made his King Crimson debut, laying the foundation, along with Pat Mastelotto, for the three-drummer line-up that makes the current King Crimson rebirth so spectacular. Eleven years of projects, dozens of concerts, complete studio recordings from that time with new stereo and 5.1 mixes, and over 10 hours of live material make Heaven & Earth the most comprehensive collection in King Crimson's continuous history.
