After February's "L.W." and the rarities collection "Teenage Gizzard", the Australians will release another studio album in July. "Butterfly 3000" is the title of their eighteenth LP in just ten years of being a band. The seven-piece combo recorded ten songs for the record last year during a pandemic at the band members' homes. Production was handled by singer and frontman Stu Mackenzie. Compared to their back catalog, however, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are barely recognizable on "Butterfly 3000." The new album is a 44-minute suite written mostly in a major key and crafted with the intention of sounding like one cohesive piece. They've traded their usual psychedelic rock fireworks for a delicate web of synth programming, MIDI sequences and arpeggio loops. Mackenzie commented: "It's one of our lightest records, made during a really difficult period. With this album we set out to do something we've never done before, and that's a positive, uplifting album in a big tone." And King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have certainly succeeded: "Butterfly 3000" is arguably the band's most laid-back record to date, a sprawling electronic soundscape at the intersection of acid and synth rock, a captivating event but also a very accessible whole that appeals to many different musical preferences. The album's title comes, as with many of Gizzard's previous albums, from the pen of artist Jason Gale. He also created the mesmerizing cover art for "Butterfly 3000," which was inspired by the autostereogram posters of the 1990s and reveals a few secrets to those who look long and hard enough. The Australians' music has evolved from original surf and garage rock to psychedelic rock and a mixture of styles including progressive rock, folk, jazz, soul and metal. The seven-piece combo released an incredible 18 studio albums between 2010 and 2021, including five in 2017 alone, as well as five live albums, two EPs and one compilation. They are now embarking on a musical journey with the release of "Butterfly 3000".
