Beethoven 5 & Triple Concerto: At the venue of the premiere, Leipzig's Gewandhaus, the famous trio of Isabelle Faust, Jean-Guihen Queyras and Martin Helmchen take on the artistic challenge of Beethoven's solitaire - after more than 200 years. Under the sensitive direction of Herbert Blomstedt, the soloists combine chamber music intimacy with virtuosic finesse, proving once again that the Triple Concerto is an unjustly underrated and too rarely programmed masterpiece. In Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, Blomstedt has achieved a previously unheard-of view of this 'symphony of destiny'. Conducted by the Grand Duke of Sweden, it is the culmination of three years of intense exploration of the Beethovenian universe: clarity instead of pretentiousness, meaning instead of pathos, tenderness instead of sentimentality characterise the impressive sound of Beethoven 6 and 7. In Symphony No. 6, the "Pastorale," Ludwig van Beethoven lets images of beautiful nature, mighty storms, and singing shepherds in the fields come alive in the listener's mind through music, while in Symphony No. 7 he leaves the proclamation to the notes alone. The performance of these works by the Gewandhaus Orchestra under the baton of its conductor emeritus, Herbert Blomstedt, brings the thrilling sense that the composer's intention and the performers are perfectly united in the service of the music's message. A calm filled with deep solemnity and grateful reverence, religious feeling and closeness to nature, joyful serenity and passion, vitality and esprit are manifested in the lively, finely nuanced interpretation of the works. Such "authenticity" matters in the creation of music. The personality and musician Herbert Blomstedt embodies this authenticity in a unique way. He creates an atmosphere in which all the wonders of music become real. Beethoven 9: Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and the musical city of Leipzig are closely linked: Gewandhauskapellmeister Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy made the work an indispensable part of the concert repertoire; Arthur Nikisch, one of his successors, established a worldwide tradition of performing this groundbreaking and fundamental work at the end of 1918. The phenomenal Herbert Blomstedt, Gewandhauskapellmeister from 1998-2005, conducted Beethoven's Ninth again in Leipzig at the turn of 2015/2016. With his former orchestra, of which he has been Honorary Conductor since 2005 and with which he has an intimate friendship, he managed a moving interpretation of this monumental work. The utopia of freedom and humanity that spans the globe, with Friedrich Schiller's ode "To Joy", written in Leipzig in 1785, grows to astonishing proportions with Blomstedt and his superb musicians, led by the magnificent voice of Christian Gerhaher.
