As the head of Epic Records, L. A. Reid has unrestricted access to Michael Jackson's archives, which include all of his vocal recordings from the past 40 years. Reid then became the curator of the final list of recordings selected for this album. These recordings were given to producers such as Timbaland, Rodney Jerkins, Stargate, Jerome "Jroc" Harmon and John McClain.
