Remastered version of the album released in 1987. "In 1986/7, The Swans went the route of the physical assault of sound that we had mostly used before. I wanted to move on to other things and not get stuck in a style that had the potential to become cartoonish if we continued in that direction. So I moved the music into unexplored territory. We spent six weeks in an old, remote medieval sawmill in Cornwall, England, where we "experimented" and perfected everything. Although there was the inevitable tension between me and the musicians at the time, I remember the episode fondly and all miss..... sigh. Everyone did a great job musically, drank local beer with gusto and ate copious amounts of free food. Jarboe also got more of a front row seat. The Gira / Kizys / Westberg / Jarboe / Parsons lineup was a really good version of the band - one of the best live versions of Swans ever - actually much more intense and haunting in performance than the nuanced recordings of the songs on these recordings. Lyrically, I've always taken on abstract themes of money, power, sex, work, etc. and I watched Jimmy Swaggart (TV evangelist) on TV a lot and thought he was a great rock musician, so I stole from him as best I could. I didn't want to make fun of the religious instinct, which would have been typical of the time, but I put myself in his shoes. Everyone wants to lose themselves in something bigger than themselves. I don't know if that's a bad thing or a good thing. Anyway, Children of God was an important turning point for Swans, and the musical tendencies that first emerged here were fertile ground for future records." ( Michael Gira/The Swans 2008)
