With Force Majeure, Tangerine Dream ended the '70s with one of Virgin's most enduring masterpieces, setting the stage for another decade of innovation. Force Majeure was recorded at Hans Ton's studio (just outside the infamous Berlin Wall) and Tangerine Dream returned to familiar, purely instrumental ground. As with Rubycon, the album was dominated by two lengthy explorations, though this time the soaring title track and closing "Thru Metamorphic Rocks" were interrupted by the relatively short "Cloudburst Flight," in which Froese delivered an intense, sharp guitar solo. "Force Majeure," however, is undoubtedly the album's highlight. Constantly nomadic and unerringly melodic, the 18-minute album offered everything from spacey atmospherics to arena-rock bombast to Kraftwerk-style icy synth-pop minimalism - and not a second was wasted. To build on that, "Thru Metamorphic Rocks" had to be good (and it was), with Kruger's impatient drums initially fueling the thunderous violence of Fröste's guitar before pulsating sequencers kick in at the five-minute mark to announce a spectacular change of course, and the band endlessly ratcheting up the tension during the final hypnotic coda.
