The album was met with mostly positive reviews from music critics. On Metacritic, which assigns a normalized score out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 73 based on 22 reviews. Andy Kellman of AllMusic said, "Kiss Land is a more extreme, abrasive and sexual release than House of Balloons, which often recalls the industrial and darkwave sounds of the '80s."
