It sounds a bit harsh, but it's one of the reasons for The xx's unique sound, which NME magazine immediately declared the in sound of London. The breathy vocals, almost austere guitars and sparse samples are reminiscent of dark 80s dream pop, yet sound excitingly new. It's clear that "xx" is already a contender for "Debut of the Year 2009".
