You could say that "Turn Back" is Toto's lost album. While their debut album went double platinum, spawned two worldwide hits, and the follow-up "Hydra" was finally recognized as a triumph of neo-progressive rock, "Turn Back" flew under the radar and barely appeared on the charts before disappearing from sight. The fact that the follow-up album Toto IV won seven Grammys and had three top ten hits only underscores this. Although it is the least known album of the early Toto era, diehard fans of the band consider it one of their creative highlights. Originally released in 1981, the band took a much more aggressive approach, cutting back on the keyboards and significantly increasing the guitars. It was an arena rock album in all senses of the word, where the band sought to throw off their critics and show that they could measure up to the likes of Foreigner and Boston. Again, most of the material was written or co-written by David Paich, but the songs are heavier and much more dynamic than their previous work. Much of the credit for this goes to renowned British co-producer Geoff Workman, who provided a raw and heavy sound. Highlights include "Goodbye Elenore", "A Million Miles Away" and the brilliantly arranged "English Eyes", which claims the title of their best album ever. In the adult genre, there are probably few bands more polarizing than the Los Angeles group, which formed in 1978 from renowned session musicians. This are still considered by many to be the paragon of radio-friendly AOR rock ("Rosanna"), but they continue to draw droves of fans to their sold-out shows. The first three albums are still among the most popular of the band's catalog among connoisseurs. Mainstream rock with West Coast style and a dash of white soul balance each other out on "Toto", "Hydra" and "Turn Back", which Rock Candy is now reissuing as the ultimate remasters (24 BIT digital).
