The album was compiled from singles released between 1987 and 2006 and was the band's first compilation album released after their record label Island Records was acquired by Universal Music Group in 1998. The album was released in several formats, including a standard CD, a deluxe double CD and a limited edition box set. The album was a commercial success, debuting at number one in over thirty countries and selling over ten million copies worldwide. It also spawned several hit singles, including "The Sweetest Thing" and "Window in the Skies". The album was met with mixed reviews from critics, who criticized the band's decision to release a compilation album instead of a new studio album.
