Although British vintage psychedelia is now perceived by many as an enchanted Alice in Wonderland garden full of blissful flower children innocently picking flowers or chasing butterflies, there has always been an element of the intimate. The power trio format popularised by Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience gave rise to a whole host of imitators, without such fads as dwarves in scarlet tunics, phenomenal cats and talismanic bikes. As the sixties drew to a close and pop slowly but inexorably evolved into rock, psychedelia gave way to a harder, leaner, heavier and louder sound. The book, I'm A Freak, Baby: A Journey Through The British Heavy Psych And Hard Rock Underground Scene 1968-72, contains three discs and four hours of music covering this largely under-documented period, and includes everything from the biggest names in the nascent hard rock/proto-metal scene (Deep Purple, Uriah Heep) to a good number of provincial semi-professional bands who toured extensively but didn't get a record deal in their lifetime. Featuring some of the pioneers of British rock (The Yardbirds, The Move), a handful of bands that ventured far beyond their blues roots (Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack, The Groundhogs), the infamous Ladbroke Grove scene (The Deviants, The Pink Fairies, Hawkwind, The Edgar Broughton Band), a few inspirational "Where-the-hell-did-that-come-from" acts like The Velvet Frogs and the mighty Egor, and a number of unreleased recordings (The Kult, Hellmet, The Phoenix) that have eluded even specialist reissue companies and bootleggers... Housed in a boxed set with a lavishly illustrated and annotated 36-page booklet, I'm A Freak, Baby is the most comprehensive anthology to date of the underground scene that was not only responsible for great music but also served as a signpost for the later emergence of British punk and heavy metal.
