She in turn wants to go to the big dance with her friend Alyssa, but that would lead to scandal in conservative Indiana. Together with the cast, the teens look for a way to get to the prom together. The story is full of differences between young and old, humorous misunderstandings, the ideal of enjoying life to the fullest and the search for one's own self.
