The Church Year with Johann Sebastian Bach: Deutschlandradio Kultur and Rondeau Production release a ten-part CD series with the Thomanerchor Leipzig documenting selected cantatas for the church year. In Leipzig, music for the church year is cultivated in a very special way. The current CD is dedicated to the Marian feasts: the cantata "Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin" was composed in 1725 for the Feast of the Purification of the Virgin Mary and "Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern" was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in the same year for the Feast of the Annunciation. The well-known chorale 'Jesus bleibet meine Freude' is heard in the cantata 'Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben'. This piece originally had a different text and was intended for the 4th Advent. After various changes to the text, the cantata was performed in Leipzig on the occasion of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in 1725. The prominent trumpet motif at the beginning gives the opening refrain a particularly festive character. The Thomaskantor Georg Christoph Biller has cast the soprano and alto solos of the cantatas with excellent boy voices from the St Thomas Boys' Choir, a special feature of the new recording.
