What's wrong with paper and cardboard packaging?

Paper sleeves can degrade over time and leave dirt on your record. Paper and cardboard sleeves (especially cardboard) can be very "rough" and can leave scratches and dirt on your LPs when the record is removed. Paper sleeves are not anti-static. "Charged" LP records then attract dirt which needs to be eliminated. This can significantly affect the quality of playback and cracking.
