Dunedin Consort

Dunedin Consort

Scottish Baroque Ensemble

The Dunedin Consort is a Scottish Baroque ensemble specializing in historically informed performance. Founded in 1995 by Susan Hamilton and directed by John Butt since 2003, the group has gained international acclaim for its dynamic and insightful interpretations of music from the Baroque era. The ensemble is named after Din Eidyn, the ancient name for Edinburgh Castle. They have a particular affinity for the works of J.S. Bach, and their recordings have received numerous awards, including the Gramophone Award for Baroque Vocal in 2007 for their recording of Handel's "Messiah" (Dublin Version, 1742). The Dunedin Consort's performances are characterized by a scholarly approach to musicology combined with vibrant musicianship. They often perform in both concert settings and recordings with a small, chamber-sized ensemble, which is believed to reflect the performing forces of the Baroque period more accurately. Their discography includes several critically acclaimed albums that have contributed to their reputation as one of the leading ensembles in historical performance practice.
