Italian Baroque Composer and Pioneer of Opera

Claudio Monteverdi (1567–1643) was an Italian composer, string player, choirmaster, and priest who is considered a pivotal figure in the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque period of music history. His work marked a significant shift in the composition of both secular and sacred music, with innovative use of harmony and structure that influenced many composers after him. Monteverdi's career spanned several decades during which he served in various prestigious positions, including as the maestro di cappella at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice.
